If you’ve spent any time in Western New York during the third weekend of September, you know that the air starts to change. The humidity of Lake Erie breaks, the leaves in East Aurora hint at gold, and the rolling hills of Knox Farm State Park transform into something magical. The sun is a little lower and the memories of summer are just beginning to transition into fall.
As someone who has spent time in the "Borderland" for the last several years, I’ve seen this festival grow from a grassroots concert into a premier East Coast destination. For 2026 (September 18–20), Borderland keeps building on its success.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned regular, here is a quick guide to navigating the 8th annual Borderland Music & Art Festival like a local.
1. The Venue: Why Knox Farm is the Headliner
Most festivals are held in dusty fairgrounds or asphalt parking lots. Borderland is different. It’s held at the historic Knox Farm State Park, an old country estate with sprawling pastures and 19th-century stables.
- Footwear Tip: Wear boots or sturdy sneakers. This is a real farm. If it rains, there will be mud; if it’s dry, the terrain is uneven. Your feet will thank you by Sunday night. Flip flops, slides and Teva's at your own risk :)
- The Feel: Because the park is so vast, you never feel "packed in." There’s room to throw a blanket down, room for the kids to run, and room to actually dance without hitting your neighbor. Its a very large area and the only time I have ever felt packed in was on a Sunday afternoon when the Bills were playing and they were showing the game on a large screen, on one of the side stages. Honestly though, that small area was so packed we could not even see the screen. We moved elswhere to a less crowded area.
2. Navigating East Aurora
East Aurora isn’t just a "host town", it’s part of the experience. It’s the birthplace of the Roycroft Arts & Crafts movement and Fisher-Price, and that creative spirit bleeds into the festival.
- Parking & Shuttles: Parking at Knox Farm fills up fast. I highly recommend looking for the town shuttles or parking in the village and taking the short walk through the park trails. It’s a scenic 15-minute stroll that gets you in the right headspace. But if you get there late morning (and not just showing up for the headliner) I have never had a problem parking right at the festival. Be warned though, the signage in the parking lot is horrible. Don't be shy asking for directions. The parking lot is very large and the first year we actually walked for 20 mintues the wrong way!
- Stay Local: If you haven’t booked your stay at the Roycroft Inn or a local Airbnb by now, do it immediately. If they are full, look for hotels in South Buffalo or Orchard Park, you’re only a 15-minute drive away. They also offered camping at Kissing Bridge which is not too far from the festival with a shuttle bus. So if you are into camping, thats a cheap way to stay and not worry about driving.
3. The Music: Americana, Grassroots, and Rock
While the 2026 lineup continues the tradition of blending national heavyweights with regional legends, the "Borderland sound" is a mix of americana, jam band and indie rock.
- Don't skip the local stage: Some of my favorite memories aren’t from the main stage headliners, but from the local Buffalo and regional acts playing the side stages early in the afternoon. The talent in Western New York is world-class.
- The Sunday "Slow Down": Sunday usually has a slightly more bluegrass/folk lean. It’s the perfect day to grab a local craft beer, sit on the hill, and soak in the final moments of summer.
4. The "Art" in Music & Art
Borderland is one of the few festivals where I actually spend money on the vendors. They curate high-end local artisans, think hand-carved wood, Roycroft-style copper work, ceramic bongs and local photography.
- The Food: This is mostly food trucks. Food trucks can be hit or miss but last year I had some pretty killer BBQ. But be warned, the food is EXPENSIVE! Think $15 for a large size of pizza! Most of the food is pretty good, but just be prepared for the prices.
- The Beer: Pretty much any craft beer version you are looking for is here.. They usually partner with local breweries like 42 North (which is located right in East Aurora) and other local and regional breweries.
- Weeed and Weed Drinks: They also seel THC infused drinks at the same tent with the beer. If you are not used to THC, please take it slow! These take an hour to hit you and can really throw you for a loop if you are not prepared. There are also actual weed tents off the to side where you can purchase "flower" etc. The official statement is that there is no smoking at the festival, but that is clearly not what happens.
5. Things To Keep In Mind
- Layer Up: Buffalo weather in late September is unpredictable. It can be 75°F at 2 PM and 45°F at 9 PM. Bring a flannel or a light jacket and stash it in your car or your backpack.
- The VIP Question: Is it worth it? If you value a private bar, porcelain bathrooms, and a prime viewing area with less wind, yes. The VIP section at Borderland is a relaxed and well-managed experience. But to be honest, for the price and where the VIP section sits, I am not really sure its worth the money. If you are facing the stage its off to the left. So viewing the stage from the VIP area you are looking at the side view of the bands on the main stage. Its all preference of course, but the festival is so spacious that we never felt so cramped in that the VIP area looked inviting enough to pay the extra money. Especially compared to something like Darien Lake, where its more worth it.
- Hydrate: There are water refill stations. Bring a reusable bottle. It saves you money and keeps the park clean.
6. Sustainable Partying
One thing I love about this festival is its commitment to the environment. They are a "leave no trace" event. Be prepared for compostable cups and a heavy emphasis on recycling. Respect the park, we’re lucky the State allows us to use this historic ground.
